Thai police recently seized two pickup trucks intended for smuggling into Myanmar, allegedly linked to a scheme where Thai nationals steal vehicles in Thailand, exchange them for methamphetamine in Myanmar, and return to sell the drugs domestically.

Yesterday, February 9, Police Colonel Yutthapong Klantakasuwan, commander of the Singhanath Task Force, directed Captain Sarawut Suwan, commander of Company 722, Singhanath Task Force, along with officers from Border Patrol Police Company 336, customs, and Pang Mapha Police Station, to seize two vehicles at Ban Pang Khong, Moo 12, Na Pu Pom subdistrict, Pang Mapha district, Mae Hong Son province.

Upon investigation, it was identified that the vehicles belonged to 29 year old Chaiwat Kumchomphu, a resident of Mae Tha district, Lamphun province. Evidence was collected and forwarded to the investigative officers at Pang Mapha Police Station to pursue legal action against those responsible.

Further reports suggest that the vehicles were likely stolen from Lamphun and nearby provinces, intending to be smuggled across the border to Huan Mueang, Doi Laem district, Shan State, Myanmar. In recent years, police have frequently intercepted similar vehicle smuggling operations.

Intelligence indicates that a group of Thai nationals living along the border are involved in stealing vehicles from Thailand, exchanging them for drugs in Myanmar, and bringing the drugs back to sell in Thailand, reported KhaoSod.

This method is reportedly preferred because the quantity of drugs obtained through vehicle exchange is significantly higher than purchasing them at regular prices.
