The shop, busy with customers, mistakenly handed the students a sum of over 30,000 baht (US$890) instead of the intended 5,000 baht (US$150) due to a mix-up between 10,000 baht (US$300) and 1,000 baht (US$30) bundles. The students returned the excess amount the next day, receiving a reward from the shop as a gesture of appreciation.

The incident took place at the Phetchthong Yaowarat gold shop, in front of the Saraburi Bus Terminal. The owner, Piraya Thanakitamporn, recounted that the shop was bustling when the two students came to exchange five 1,000 baht notes.

In the confusion, they were mistakenly given three bundles of 10,000 baht each and two bundles of 50 baht notes which were thought to be 1,000 baht bundles. The owner admitted that the error went unnoticed at the time.

The following day, the students’ mother visited the shop to inform them of the mistake. The shop owner expressed delight and admiration for the students’ integrity and thanked them for returning the money, rewarding them with 1,000 baht for their honesty.

Further interviews at Suankularb Wittayalai School in Saraburi revealed more about the students, 18 year old Thiraporn “Baifern” Laophusing and 18 year old Phornchanok “Beam” Phimsen, who was absent due to illness. Both are high school seniors.

Thiraporn explained that the money they exchanged was collected for a classroom fund, intended to be returned to their classmates before graduation. They initially sought smaller denominations for easier distribution, unaware that banks could provide such a service.

During the exchange, the shop mistakenly handed them the wrong amount. Upon recounting the money at home, Beam, the class treasurer, realised the error and informed Thiraporn, reported KhaoSod.

Beam’s mother then accompanied the students to return the excess money to the shop, where they were thanked and given a token of appreciation, which they humbly accepted, as they did not wish to keep the excess amount for themselves.
