Police halt convoy disguising drug transport as family trip in Chumphon

Police intercepted a convoy attempting to transport 100 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, disguising the operation as a family trip. Yesterday, April 28, Police Major General Khongkrit Lertsitthikul directed officers to arrest four people in Chumphon province.

Those arrested included 40 year old Narongsak, 43 year old Sirisak, 19 year old Pornpen, and a 17 year old referred to as A. They were found with 100 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, two vehicles, and six mobile phones near the Highway Police Service Unit on Road 41, heading south at kilometre 62 in Chumphon.

Before the arrest, the Narcotics Suppression Bureau had been informed about a large drug shipment being transported from Prachuap Khiri Khan province to drug dealers in Songkhla province. The suspects used two cars to make the journey, posing as a family on a road trip to avoid police scrutiny. The Chumphon highway police were alerted to set up checkpoints along suspected routes.

Officers subsequently spotted and stopped the two suspicious vehicles, matching the descriptions provided. Upon inspection, they discovered 100 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine hidden in six parcel boxes inside the cars.

All four suspects were detained for questioning. During the interrogation, the suspects confessed to being hired by a financier to transport the drugs to clients in Songkhla province, receiving a payment of 100,000 baht (US$3,000) per trip.

They claimed to have conducted similar operations multiple times. However, A denied any involvement in the drug trafficking, stating she was merely accompanying Pornpen, who had invited her on what she believed to be a trip to Songkhla, reported KhaoSod.

Following the initial questioning, charges were filed against all four for the distribution of a category 1 narcotic. They were then handed over to the investigation team of Division 4, Narcotics Suppression Bureau, for legal proceedings. As A is a minor, she was transferred to Salui Police Station in Chumphon for further relevant actions.
