Monk-y business! Thugs bash holy man over debt in Nonthaburi

A violent debt collection incident occurred involving a monk residing at a temple in Mueang district, Nonthaburi. Two men attacked the monk, Phra Phromphong, in his living quarters yesterday, April 21, causing severe injuries, before leaving him by the roadside in the Pak Kret area.
A 26 year old woman, Jutatip, and Boontipat Charoenliha, a 48 year old representative of the Dare to Step Forward page, presented evidence to journalists. The incident, which took place at 11pm on April 19, saw Phra Phromphong, a monk and Jutatip’s brother, become the target of this brutal attack.
Jutatip recounted that her brother arrived at her home seeking assistance after the incident. She took him to a hospital where medical examinations revealed severe facial injuries, including a broken left cheekbone, a fractured left jaw, and a deviated nasal fracture. He also had abrasions on his body and required oxygen support due to breathing difficulties.
The Dare to Step Forward page’s representative shared that the complaint was initially received from Phra Phromphong’s friends. They stated that on the night of April 19, two men entered the temple grounds, demanding the repayment of a 10,000 baht (US$300) debt from Phra Phromphong.
When he was unable to pay, one of the attackers used a firearm to strike his face, forcing him to change out of his monk’s robes into civilian clothes. The men then coerced him into leaving the temple to continue the assault in an alley in the Pak Kret district, reported KhaoSod.
After the attack, the monk was left severely beaten and had to flag down a taxi to seek help from his sister.
No information was shared to whether the police were looking into the incident.
In similar news, a 70 year old monk sustained serious injuries after being assaulted in his living quarters in Buriram province. Police suspect the attacker targeted the monk over a fabricated debt claim of 2 million baht.
The alleged assailant, a 34 year old man, was described by his father as mentally unstable, claiming that his son had been exhibiting erratic behaviour and talking to himself for the past year.
