Grenade attack at Songkhla construction site injures three
A construction workers’ camp was attacked with an M79 grenade launcher, leading to a fire and injuring three people. The assault occurred in a private company’s restricted area in Thepha district, Songkhla, early this morning. Police are actively investigating the incident.
The unexpected attack took place at approximately 6am, targeting the workers’ accommodation within a large Guan Yin statue construction site located in Ban Pak Bang Sakom, Sakom subdistrict.
Following two explosive sounds, a fire erupted, and thick black smoke engulfed the area, causing a state of panic among the residents. The immediate response involved the local fire brigade from the Sakom subdistrict, who tackled the blaze with urgency.
Early investigations revealed damage to a pickup truck and injuries sustained by three workers who were promptly attended to by emergency services. The injured individuals suffered various wounds across their bodies.
Pieces believed to be from the M79 grenade launcher used in the attack were discovered at the scene, suggesting the assailant fired two rounds from a distance.
The area under attack is identified as being part of a private company’s closed-off zone, where the construction of a significant Guan Yin statue is underway. This project is managed by the same entity responsible for the Chana Industrial Estate project, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation, said a police spokesperson.
“The cause of the explosion has yet to be definitively linked to any unrest situation. Other potential conflicts are being explored.”
Police are yet to determine the exact motive behind the attack. The possibility of it being related to local unrest or other disputes is still under consideration. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to gather evidence, including reviewing CCTV footage and identifying any suspicious individuals in the vicinity, reported KhaoSod.
The locality of Songkhla has occasionally been the backdrop for unrest, raising suspicions about the potential motives behind the attack. However, officials remain cautious and are not jumping to conclusions, as they methodically sift through evidence to piece together the events leading up to the explosions.
