Bangkok woman assaulted by gang, mother seek justice (video)

Over 100 friends of the victim gather at police station to confront the attackers

A large group of friends gathered at a police station after their friend, a 27 year old woman, was assaulted by a gang in Bangkok. The incident, which was captured on video, set her mother on a path to seek justice.

Today, May 5, a video of a violent incident outside an apartment in Ratchada Soi 13, Din Daeng district, circulated online.

A group of men and women was seen attacking a woman, later identified as Mai. The video, lasting four minutes, shows the victim attempting to escape but was pursued and assaulted. The post gained significant attention online.

The victim’s family contacted Sutthisan Police Station and the Kan Jompalang Facebook page, a social activist, for help locating Mai, who had been unreachable. Police Colonel Phornthap Chalermkiat ordered a search, and the victim was found nearby and reunited with her family before filing a police report.

In a short time, police detained three suspects: two women and one man. However, as the male suspect was escorted for questioning, over 100 friends of the victim gathered outside the police station, expressing dissatisfaction and attempting to confront the suspects.

Police intervened, calming the situation and explaining procedures to the crowd, who eventually dispersed. Investigations revealed five people were involved: three women and two men. Police are pursuing the remaining suspects.

Mai’s mother, 51 year old Chanthana, expressed her anger at the incident. She stated that although her daughter was pleading for mercy, the assailants continued their attack. Mai even claimed to be pregnant to deter them, but to no avail.

Chanthana vowed to seek full legal action, acknowledging her daughter’s struggles with substance use and mental health issues. The victim had a previous altercation with the group, but details were unclear.

According to her friends, Mai had been assaulted during the Songkran festival and was involved in retaliatory violence on May 1, which preceded the recent attack. They criticised the attackers’ actions as excessive.

Police are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to understand all angles of the months-long dispute between the parties, starting with a prior altercation involving Mai, as well as the recent assault, reported KhaoSod.
