Surat Thani to welcome new cruise terminal by 2032

Plans are underway to construct a large cruise terminal in Surat Thani, set for completion by 2032 in a move to boost the tourism economy and accommodate increasing international cruise traffic in the southern province.

Government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub announced this during a visit to Surat Thani yesterday, March 9, to assess the port development progress, following the Cabinet’s approval in a mobile session held in Songkhla in February.

During the visit, Jirayu received updates on the cruise terminal project, as well as the island’s drainage and sewage systems, from local officials, including Koh Samui’s acting mayor Chatchai Manee and Koh Samui Regional Marine Office director Adul Raluekmoon.

The Marine Department confirmed that the current port in Don Sak district, which handles tourist vessels and boats, is already capable of transporting visitors to Koh Samui. The new cruise terminal in Koh Samui will enhance these capabilities, with construction due to start in 2029 and expected to finish by 2032.

Jirayu emphasised the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in South Thailand to stimulate economic growth, boost tourism, and ensure sustainable resource management.

The delegation also visited the proposed terminal site in the Laem Hin Khom area of tambon Taling Ngam, approximately 15 kilometres from the district centre. They reviewed the land expropriation process, with most residents reportedly supportive of relocating. Compensation will be provided to affected residents.

The terminal will cover 47 rai, with a pier capable of handling two large cruise ships simultaneously, accommodating 4,000 and 2,500 passengers each.

The project, with a budget of 12.172 billion baht and a lifespan of 30 years, is expected to support 120 cruise routes annually and generate at least 8 billion baht in revenue. The Transport Ministry views the terminal as vital for positioning Koh Samui as a leading international cruise destination, reported Bangkok Post.

In similar news, two weeks after the debut of The White Lotus season three, Koh Samui is experiencing a significant tourism boom, with luxury hotel room rates climbing by up to 50%.
