Power out: Phuket prepares for outage today

The Phuket branch of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) has issued a notice about a scheduled power outage today, March 20, due to electrical system improvements. The power cut will take place between 9am and 4.30pm, impacting several key areas across the island.

Residents and businesses near the intersection in front of D Condo Kuku, along one side of Ratsadanusorn Road, the Chanakan Delight Kuku housing estate, Nattakamol Kuku Village, Soi Muang Uthit, and extending to Soi Tri Sathit will experience the outage.

These areas will be without electricity for the entire duration of the shutdown.

Additionally, the PEA has warned that nearby regions might experience brief power interruptions lasting around 30 minutes in both the morning and afternoon.

These temporary outages are aimed at minimising the overall downtime for the electrical system upgrades, reported The Phuket News.

PEA Phuket has apologised for the disruption and urged affected residents to reach out if they have any concerns or questions. Residents can call the PEA Phuket branch at 076-210427-8, message them via their official Facebook page, or contact the PEA hotline at 1129 for more information.

While the upgrades are crucial for improving the local electrical infrastructure, PEA Phuket understands the inconvenience and is working to keep the outages as brief as possible.

In similar news, the Thai government’s controversial decision to cut power, oil, and Internet services to border areas near Myanmar has reportedly yielded positive results, with losses from call scams dropping by at least 200 million baht.

Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong announced that since the power shutoff on February 5, cybercrime activity has significantly decreased, particularly call scams.

The measure led to a 20% reduction in reported cybercrime cases, with 25,487 cases recorded post-shutdown, compared to 31,159 in January. Prasert also noted a 67% drop in call scam complaints, with over 1,000 daily cases prior to the intervention.
