Brief encounter! Lawyer cuffed over ‘land grab’ threats in Phuket

A Phuket lawyer found himself on the wrong side of the law after allegedly trying to muscle in on someone else’s land, using threats and intimidation to stake his claim.

Anantrak Phethin was nicked in broad daylight on Thursday morning, April 3, in the car park of the Phuket Provincial Land Office, after cops swooped in with a court-issued arrest warrant.

The dramatic takedown, which took place around 11.10am on Damrong Road, was led by senior officers under the direction of Police Colonal Sinlert Sukhum, Commander of the Phuket Provincial Police, and Pol. Lt. Col. Warattha Wutthirak, Deputy Chief of Investigation.

The 40 year old lawyer stands accused of “jointly entering another person’s real estate to take possession… or disturbing normal possession by threatening to use violence,” according to Warrant No. 266/2568 issued by Phuket Provincial Court the same day.

Officers had been tracking Anantrak’s movements before closing in at the land office. Once identified, he confirmed his identity via ID card and reportedly admitted to being the subject of the warrant, Phuket News reported.

Police said Anantrak also acknowledged he had not previously surrendered or been arrested in connection with the case.

He was promptly read his rights, including the right to remain silent, the right to legal representation, and the right to notify someone he trusts. Anantrak chose to contact Daonapa Petchjan about his detention.

Police stressed the arrest was by-the-book, with no force, threats, or property seizures involved.

Anantrak also faces allegations of harassment and multiple marriages. This comes after previous revelations on a television show regarding claims of harassment and his admission of being involved with over 10 women.

The accused was later transferred to Patong Police Station for further legal proceedings, marking a stunning fall from grace for the man who once practised law, and now needs it.
