Phuket Bar Association denies covering up lawyer’s abuse scandal (video)

The Phuket Provincial Bar Association hit back at accusations that it failed to take action against a local lawyer accused of abusing his former girlfriend, borrowing 1.2 million baht from her, and threatening her when she demanded repayment.
The case, which garnered national attention after the victim appeared on the TV programme Hon Krasae to expose the lawyer’s actions, sparked public outrage and accusations that the Phuket Bar Association was protecting its own.
In response to the backlash, Phuket Bar Association President Rungnapa Phutkaew issued a statement, clarifying that the association had not ignored the allegations.
Rungnapa emphasised that any lawyer found guilty of misconduct must be held accountable and assured the public that the case is currently under review by the Ethics Committee, an independent body tasked with investigating such matters.
“The woman had initially filed a complaint with the National Lawyers Council in Bangkok, not with the Phuket Provincial Bar Association,” said Rungnapa.
“She came to ask for advice and did not submit anything formally. She insisted on filing a complaint with the Central Bar Association herself. We have expedited the process of her case and continued to provide advice.”
Rungnapa also addressed reports claiming the association had ignored a complaint filed on December 18 last year.
“The Ethics Committee formally received the case only in February. The committee is following due process, which includes notifying the accused and gathering evidence before proceeding further.”
She stressed that the Phuket Bar Association does not have the authority to directly punish lawyers, but can forward cases to the Ethics Committee for disciplinary action.
“Penalties for misconduct range from warnings and three-year suspensions to permanent disbarment.”
The Phuket Bar Association also pointed out that the victim had previously sought legal advice two years ago regarding threats and domestic violence, but did not file an official ethics complaint at the time.
Rungnapa clarified that it was only later that the victim chose to submit a complaint to the Ethics Committee.
The association reassured the public that it remains committed to upholding legal standards, encouraging anyone affected by lawyer misconduct to file complaints through the appropriate channels.
“We are not siding with any lawyers. Those who break the law deserve to be punished.”
Rungnapa urged the public to continue reporting unethical behaviour.
The Phuket Provincial Bar Association remains dedicated to ensuring justice is served and that professional standards are maintained, reported The Phuket News.
