American man stabs himself while reading about death in Pattaya

An American man remains in critical condition after stabbing himself in the neck and chest on a traffic island in Pattaya yesterday, April 3.
A Thai woman, 63 year old Thippawan Chaisuwan, visibly frightened, rushed to the Mueang Pattaya Traffic Police booth on Sukhumvit Road in Bang Lamung district to report a foreign man, covered in blood, was sitting on a traffic island about 100 metres from the booth, holding a knife.
Police reported that they found the foreigner sitting and reading an unidentified book, despite having sustained severe neck injuries. He dressed in jeans, a blue T-shirt, and a grey jacket and wrapped a white cloth around his head. Nearby, a blood-stained knife was stuck into the ground.
Officers called for a rescue team and cautiously approached the man in an attempt to assist him. However, the foreigner began stabbing himself repeatedly in the chest as they drew closer and also attempted to injure the officers.
He then struck the ground with his fist before losing consciousness ten minutes later due to significant blood loss. Rescue workers rushed him to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya.

At the scene, police found the man’s passport, identifying him as 35 year old American national, Brian Okeefe Green. Several books believed to belong to Green were also discovered on the traffic island. The books reportedly explore themes of the afterlife, loss, and the world’s most dangerous places.

Thippawan told ThaiRath that she saw the man reading a book while continuously pointing a knife at his own neck.
Thippawan said she was deeply concerned that the foreigner might take someone nearby hostage, prompting her to alert the police.
ThaiRath reported that Green remains in a critical condition due to the depth of his self-inflicted wounds. The motive for his violent behaviour has not yet been determined. Officers are awaiting his recovery to conduct an interview.

In a similar self-harm reported in October last year, a Danish man inflicted wounds on his arms and neck with a surgical knife at a hospital in Bangkok. He sustained serious injuries and lost a significant amount of blood. Police did not confirm the motive behind that act.
