Young man in Buriram hospitalised after auditory hallucinations

A 21 year old man in Buriram province attempted to take his own life after being haunted by mysterious voices. Following a rescue by police, he was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The young man had recently been ordained as a summer monk but requested to leave early due to these auditory hallucinations.
When questioned, Natthawut revealed that during his ordination at a local temple, he experienced nightly auditory disturbances that disrupted his sleep and mental state, preventing him from performing monk duties. Originally supposed to be ordained for 15 days, he left early, hoping the voices would cease once at home. However, the voices persisted.
His 65 year old mother stated that before ordination, Natthawut was in good health. During his time at the temple, he reportedly heard voices every night.
On one occasion, he ran up and down the temple’s main Buddha statue, alarming fellow devotees who assisted him. Concerned by his condition, she arranged for him to leave the monkhood early.
Despite returning home, the auditory disturbances continued, leading to his attempted suicide.
According to his mother, after noticing these changes, she consulted a local medium, who attributed the disturbances to unappeased spirits due to a lack of traditional offerings during Natthawut’s ordination.
Fearing for his safety, she contacted emergency services to take him to the hospital for a thorough physical and mental health evaluation, asserting that he had no history of drug use or mental illness.
A neighbour who intervened during Natthawut’s initial attempt described seeing him attempt self-harm during the day and again in the evening. They managed to stop him both times and alerted emergency services, reported KhaoSod.
When asked, Natthawut claimed he heard his name being called despite no one being there. Neighbours supported the family’s decision to seek medical help for Natthawut’s unexplained condition.
