German man in Krabi hospitalised after drug-induced hallucinations

A German expat in Krabi was taken for rehabilitation after experiencing intense hallucinations, allegedly from self-made drugs, causing a public disturbance by shouting for hours.
Yesterday, February 17, police were called to a house in Village 4, Sai Thai subdistrict, after neighbours reported a foreigner screaming uncontrollably, disrupting the usually quiet community.
Upon arrival, officers were met by 33 year old Kun (pseudonym), a Thai woman who pleaded for help, explaining that her 37 year old German husband was suffering from hallucinations and paranoia. She feared he might harm her or himself.
Kun revealed that her husband, a chemical engineer, had been experimenting with Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a powerful psychedelic, which he synthesised for personal use.
Since starting two weeks ago, he had been seeing visions of Lord Buddha and attempting to climb out of windows, believing he was in danger.
“This is the second time he’s lost control and damaged household items.”

While police strategised how to subdue him safely, the German man burst out of the house, shirtless, shouting at officers and declaring his wealth.
When police attempted to use forked sticks to restrain him, he fled inside but later re-emerged, calmer and wearing a shirt, reported The Nation.
After negotiations, he agreed to seek medical treatment in exchange for no drug-related charges. Police later escorted him to a hospital for rehabilitation.
In similar news, a 21 year old man in Buriram province attempted to take his own life after being tormented by mysterious voices. Police rescued him and took him to the hospital for evaluation.
Natthawut had recently been ordained as a summer monk but left early due to disturbing auditory hallucinations that disrupted his sleep and mental state.
Originally set to stay for 15 days, he hoped the voices would stop once he returned home, but they persisted. His 65 year old mother said he was in good health before ordination but began hearing voices nightly at the temple.
