Wife ends husband’s life support after years of infidelity

The story centres on a 38 year old man from Liaoning Province, China, who had been living with his mistress for several years while still legally married to his wife. The man suffered a brain haemorrhage while at his mistress’s home, prompting her to rush him to the hospital. After he was admitted to the ICU, doctors attempted to locate the mistress to obtain consent for surgery, but she had already left the hospital.

Subsequently, the man’s legal wife arrived at the hospital and informed the medical team that she was his wife. The attending physician, Chen, explained to her that the patient’s condition was critical and that the chances of survival were minimal. The medical equipment being used could only provide temporary relief, and the surgery costs were prohibitively high.

Upon hearing this, the wife revealed that she had known about her husband’s infidelity for many years. She expressed that he had neglected her emotionally and financially, leading her to fall out of love with him long ago. Consequently, she refused to sign the consent forms for the surgery and requested that the doctors remove her husband’s life support to end the treatment.

According to Chinese law, if a patient is unable to make decisions, doctors are required to explain the surgical risks to the patient’s relatives and obtain written consent. This means that, in certain situations, parents or spouses can make decisions on behalf of the patient.
