Winter festival in Thailand to boost tourism through creative events

Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin declared plans to extend the country’s annual winter festival nationwide, renaming it the Thailand Winter Festivals. This announcement followed a strategic meeting with key figures including Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool, and Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.

The primary focus of their discussion was the forthcoming “Colourful Bangkok Winter Festival” scheduled for year-end.

The government is gearing up to launch a minimum of 11 activities related to soft power, with more details set to be released in the coming month. The Colourful Bangkok Festival is a joint initiative by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and the Culture Ministry. Its essence is to leverage soft power to elevate the event to international standards.

The winter festival, representative of creative tourism, is anticipated to boost tourism as it coincides with the high travel season. Spanning from October to December, the festival will celebrate winter in Bangkok, presenting the city’s lifestyle and identity through creative tourism.

The winter festival is made up of five main events: The 2023 Loi Krathong Festival, Vijit Chao Phraya 2023, Amazing Thailand Passport Privileges, Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2023, and Amazing Thailand Countdown 2024.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool voiced the objective of these events, which are aimed at showcasing the city’s vibrant lifestyle and identity through creative tourism. One of the missions of City Hall is to promote Bangkok as a cultural and creative city. This winter festival, through its arts, performances, and the New Year Countdown on Rattanakosin Island, will demonstrate this identity reported Bangkok Post.

For the success of Colourful Bangkok, City Hall has collaborated with multiple sectors, as revealed by 57 year old Chadchart. He emphasised the city’s commitment to ensure the winter festival is a resounding success, bringing vibrancy and excitement to the capital during the winter season.
