Summer storm hits Thailand with heavy rain and hail

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a forecast warning of a summer storm affecting 58 provinces with heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and possible lightning. The announcement yesterday, April 28, to Thursday, May 1, with regions in northern and northeastern Thailand expected to be affected.

The TMD’s 24-hour forecast indicates that upper Thailand will experience summer storms, characterised by thunderstorms, gusty winds, hail, and heavy rain in some areas. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay cautious and avoid open spaces, large trees, unstable structures, and billboards.

Farmers are urged to reinforce fruit trees and prepare to mitigate potential damage to crops and livestock. Additionally, attention to health during these changing weather conditions is recommended. A 15-day rain forecast indicates the need for vigilance due to the summer storm.

This weather phenomenon results from a moderate high-pressure system from China that covers Vietnam and the South China Sea, causing southeasterly and southwesterly winds to affect upper Thailand. While the region is experiencing hot to very hot weather, a western wind wave from Myanmar is moving into northern Thailand.

Meanwhile, the southern region will have heavy rain due to southeasterly winds over the Gulf of Thailand, the southern region, and the Andaman Sea. Mariners are advised to avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms, where waves can exceed 2 metres.
