Phanphet Phadungchai

There’s been a tragedy in the world of Thai boxing, commonly known as Muay Thai. After a boxer was declared brain dead last week after his opponent knocked him out in a match last week. The boxer, known as Phanphet Phadungchai, had suffered a brain haemorrhage after the fight.

Phanphet’s final match was on July 15, at the Thupatemi Air Force boxing stadium in central Thailand’s Pathum Thani province. Phanphet had fought against a Frenchman who goes by the ring name Anthony TFC. With just one minute and 18 seconds left in the match, Anthony hit Phanphet hard in his jaw, and Phanphet fell to the floor and lost consciousness.

He was then rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was found to be brain dead after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

Brain death is the permanent, irreversible, and complete loss of brain function. A person diagnosed with brain death has no chance of recovery because their body is unable to survive without artificial life support.

Phanpet used to compete for Thailand’s national Muay Thai team, winning a silver medal at the 2019 SEA games in the Philippines. Muay Thai fans are sure to mourn the loss of such a high ranking fighter.
