Muay Thai boxer flees after fatally slitting father’s throat

A Muay Thai boxer escaped and hid in the Yala mountain forests after fatally slitting his father’s throat at their home in the early hours of this morning.

Mueang Yala Police Station officers responded to the incident at around 6am today, August 15, investigating the house in the Bannang Sareng sub-district, Mueang district, Yala province, following a report of the death of a 72 year old Thai man, Waenu Wahani.

Waenu sustained a deep cut to his neck, which nearly severed his head. A blood-stained kitchen knife was found near his body. Officers transferred the deceased to the hospital for an autopsy before returning the body to his relatives for a funeral.

The suspected murderer is reported to be his son, 27 year old Hasen Wahani, a successful Muay Thai boxer known in the industry as Saifon Rattanaphanu.

Hasen reportedly fled the scene after the alleged murder and is believed to be hiding in the forest on Bu Yo Mountain. However, the police have yet to confirm this information.

The community leader who discovered the body told PPTV HD that Hasen recently returned home from Bangkok. He seldom returned home after becoming a boxer and the incident occurred only five days after his arrival.

Hasen’s older sister disclosed that there had never been any arguments between her father and brother. Their father even sold a cow to support Hasen’s dream of becoming a Muay Thai boxer. She insisted she did not know her brother’s whereabouts and urged him to turn himself in as soon as possible.

The sister also pleaded with the police not to use deadly force during her brother’s arrest, believing that Hasen committed the crime due to financial stress, as he had not fought or earned money for about three to four months.

Hasen is well-known in the Muay Thai boxing community, having won the Tiger Cement (Poon Suea) Muay Thai Boxing Tournament in 2016 when he was just 19 years old.

He has since participated in many major boxing matches in Thailand, including the Lumpini Muay Thai Championship, Channel 7 Muay Thai Championship, and Kiatpetch Championship.
