Firestarter: Thai man torches own home in Yasothon blaze

A man suffering from mental health issues set fire to his own home, causing significant damage to a two-storey wooden house in Ban Song Pueay, Mueang Song Pueay, Kham Khuean Kaeo district, Yasothon province. The incident occurred yesterday, January 13, with strong winds exacerbating the fire’s rapid spread.

Emergency services deployed two firetrucks to the scene, working alongside locals who helped to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby houses. It took over one hour to bring the fire under control.

Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities, though the house was almost entirely destroyed by the fire.

The homeowner, 32 year old Preecha Damngam, was identified as the firestarter due to a bout of mental instability. Police managed to detain him promptly, finding him smiling despite the chaos, reported KhaoSod.

The reasons behind his actions remain unclear, prompting officials to take him into custody for further investigation to uncover the facts.

In related news, a tragic fire erupted on January 11, in a three-storey commercial building in Suphan Buri Municipality, resulting in the death of Phusit Rungronchaiporn, a 52 year old candidate for District 1 Provincial Councillor, along with his family members.

Phusit’s wife, Kanokwan, their 26 year old son Teerawat, and their 24 year old daughter Warasiri also perished in the incident. The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the police.

Udom Prongfa, a mayoral candidate for the Suphan Buri Provincial Administrative Organisation, was present at the scene to offer condolences to Phusit’s father, Poonsak Rungronchaiporn, who was in a state of deep grief and shock.

Udom expressed his sorrow, recalling a dinner he had with Phusit the night before the tragic event. He described Phusit as a kind and humble individual, cherished by many for his service to the community.
