Macron offers to mediate Cambodia-Thailand border dispute
Hun Manet reaffirms Cambodia’s four-point approach to resolving the border conflict
French President Emmanuel Macron has extended a helping hand to resolve the ongoing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, offering to facilitate the provision of documents if needed.
The announcement came during a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Nice, France, with the French president expressing willingness to assist both countries in resolving their differences peacefully.
Speaking at a press conference today, June 12, Jean-François Tan, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, summarised the results of PM Hun Manet’s visit to France. Tan shared that the Prime Minister had met with several global leaders, including Macron, to discuss Cambodia’s position on the border issues with Thailand.
According to Tan, PM Hun Manet reaffirmed Cambodia’s stance on the dispute during the meeting with Macron, which mirrors previous statements made to Malaysia’s prime minister. Cambodia’s four-point approach to resolving the border conflict has been outlined by the government, emphasising peace, cooperation, and legal processes.
The first point stresses Cambodia’s commitment to maintaining peaceful relations and cooperation with Thailand. Secondly, Cambodia has decided to bring the contentious border issues concerning Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Toch Temple, Ta Krabey Temple, and the Mom Bei area to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to seek a peaceful resolution. This decision is aimed at avoiding prolonged disputes that could potentially lead to further conflict.
Thirdly, Cambodia remains committed to working with Thailand through the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) to demarcate the remaining boundary areas. Lastly, Cambodia continues to uphold strong relations with Thailand, using existing diplomatic mechanisms to benefit both nations.
Tan clarified that the discussions with Macron were not aimed at receiving a direct response but at clarifying Cambodia’s position on the matter. While the French President did not offer a definitive solution, he expressed that France could assist by facilitating necessary documents or supporting both countries in their negotiations, reported Khmer Times.
PM Hun Manet attended the 3rd United Nations Conference on Oceans in Nice, France, from June 9-11, where he also engaged in talks about global ocean management and environmental sustainability.
