Fuel smuggling probe launched after Cambodian TikTok video

The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) is investigating an alleged fuel smuggling case after a Cambodian social media user posted a video appearing to show fuel being purchased from a Thai-flagged oil tanker.

A Cambodian TikTok user shared the footage on Tuesday, March 31, showing him and colleagues working aboard an oil tanker while monitoring what appeared to be the transfer of fuel from another tanker to their vessel. In the background, a Thai national flag could be seen on the other ship, suggesting the tanker was from Thailand.

The video was later reposted by Thai Facebook user Somchai Song Pong, who questioned the RTN and other relevant agencies about whether the transaction was legal.

Somchai also said the Cambodian man in the clip claimed the fuel was sold at a low price, which he argued did not match market conditions at a time when fuel prices have continued to rise.

RTN spokesperson Parach Rattanachaiyapan responded on April 1, saying the navy had acknowledged public concerns about the footage. He said an investigation was underway and that anyone found involved in fuel smuggling would be punished.

Parach also thanked members of the public for reporting information to officials, but urged people to avoid spreading false information and to rely on official statements from Thai agencies.

The allegations come as fuel prices in Thailand increased again on April 1, following a 6 baht rise on March 26. Diesel rose by 3.50 baht, while petrol increased by 1.20 baht.

The fuel shown in the video was believed to be green diesel, primarily sold at a special price for licensed fishing vessels in Thailand.

According to Thai PBS, the price of green diesel in Thailand has increased from about 20 baht per litre to around 40.80 to 48.40 baht per litre. The report said the higher cost has led some fishing operators to suspend operations.
