Cabinet reshuffle expected by July, economic affairs focus

A Cabinet reshuffle is anticipated before July, with political analysts predicting changes within the economic affairs ministerial positions. Despite anticipated adjustments, the Bhumjaithai Party is expected to remain in the ruling coalition, which is vital for the government’s stability.

Yutthaporn Issarachai, a political science lecturer at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University, indicated to the Bangkok Post that this reshuffle would likely occur between May and July, shortly after the Paetongtarn Shinawatra administration marks its six-month tenure.

At that juncture, the government is expected to revise its strategy, policy, and personnel to enhance its performance and sustain public support.

The government is concentrating on addressing economic issues, hence the reshuffle is anticipated to introduce a new team of ministers overseeing economic affairs, predominantly controlled by the Pheu Thai Party. While substantial changes to other coalition party portfolios are not expected, Cabinet seats may be exchanged among parties.

Changes are expected chiefly at ministries managed by Pheu Thai. Bhumjaithai is unlikely to relinquish the Interior Ministry, having already built a network of party-affiliated officials in preparation for the next General Election.

Pheu Thai is unlikely to exclude Bhumjaithai from the coalition, as their departure would hinder Parliamentary operations. Bhumjaithai’s influence among senators further solidifies their necessity within the coalition until the government’s term ends.

Jatuporn Prompan, leader of the People’s Unity Group, expressed that a Cabinet reshuffle after six months in office is standard for Pheu Thai. He dismissed the possibility of Bhumjaithai being expelled, emphasising their continued importance for coalition stability.

A survey by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) revealed growing support for a Cabinet reshuffle. Conducted from April 5 to 9, the survey involved 1,310 individuals aged 18 and above nationwide, assessing public sentiment on potential cabinet changes.

Survey results showed 48.24% of participants advocating for an immediate reshuffle, while 16.18% saw no need for changes. Additionally, 15.5% supported a reshuffle in three months, 10.07% preferred a six-month wait, and 6.95% suggested a year-long postponement. Only 1.53% recommended waiting nine months, with the remainder either undecided or opting not to respond.

When queried on which ministries should experience changes, 57.02% of respondents pointed to the Ministry of Commerce, followed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (48.55%), and the Ministry of Finance (46.49%).
