9-month pregnant woman & husband arrested on drug charges
A 9-month pregnant woman and her husband were arrested in the Isaan province of Udon Thani yesterday for using and selling drugs. The woman confessed to being a habitual user even though she is pregnant.
Officers from Baan Phue Police Station raided a cottage inside a rubber plantation in the None Thong sub-district, Baan Phue district in Udon Thani after being notified the property was being used for drug smuggling.
Officers found a pickup parked inside the plantation with 20 year old pregnant Sasima, and her 26-year-old husband, Jakkapong, standing nearby the vehicle.
The woman immediately broke into tears after seeing the police. On her was a blue backpack full of drugs. Some 1,581 methamphetamine tablets and 3.4 grams of crystal methamphetamine were found inside the backpack all in plastic bags ready for distribution.
The Deputy Suppression Inspector of Baan Phue Police Station, Somsak Dutpayap, reported that the couple had been using and selling drugs in the area for a long time. The pregnant woman is scheduled to have her baby on October 3 and her urine tested positive for drugs.
Somsak added that the rubber plantation belonged to the couple too. They hired locals to take care of it and paid their salary with money and drugs.
The couple faces a charge according to Section 162 of the Narcotics Act: Anyone who uses drugs from Narcotic Category 1, 2, or 3, shall be punished with imprisonment for up to one year, fined up to 20,000 baht, or both.
They also faced another charge according to Section 148: Anyone who manufactures, imports, exports, sells, or possesses drugs under Narcotic Category 1, shall be punished with imprisonment of up to 15 years and fined up to 1,500,000 baht.
