2 Bangkok cops injured in arrest of knife wielding Chinese man
Two policemen sustained facial injuries while arresting a Chinese man wielding a knife at a 7-Eleven convenience store in the Huay Kwang neighbourhood of Bangkok last night.
A worker at the 7-Eleven store, located at the entrance of Soi Si Muang Anusorn, 400 metres from Sutthisan Police Station, called the police to address the situation at around 4pm yesterday, October 28. The Chinese man reportedly entered the shop holding a knife.
The Chinese national attempted to speak to the Thai employees in Chinese but no one could understand him. He then used a translation app to inform the staff that “someone was attempting to kidnap him for ransom.”
According to ThaiRath, the man displayed behaviour resembling that of a drug user, with dazed eyes and apparent hallucinations. He only communicated with female employees and attempted to harm any men who approached him.
Two police officers arrived at the store 15 minutes later. They attempted to engage with the Chinese man but were unsuccessful, as he seemed hostile towards men. Despite efforts to calm him down through conversation, he remained uncooperative.
The officers then decided to subdue him, leading to a chaotic struggle. During the altercation, the two officers sustained cuts to their mouths and necks. Witnesses and motorcycle taxi drivers intervened to assist, and together they managed to restrain and arrest the Chinese national.
ThaiRath reported that the man has been identified as Yang Jinxim. He is currently in custody at the police station and faces three charges, including:
- Section 136 of the Criminal Law: Insulting an officer on duty. The penalty is imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both.
- Section 138 of the Criminal Law: Assaulting or obstructing an officer on duty. The penalty is imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both.
- Section 371 of the Criminal Law: Carrying a weapon in a public place without a valid reason. The penalty is a fine of up to 100 baht, and the weapon will be confiscated.
The police did not disclose whether they conducted drug or alcohol tests on the suspect.
