Lucky firecracker numbers spark lotto frenzy in Suphan Buri

Merit-making ritual draws crowds and unexpected lottery excitement

Villagers in Suphan Buri, central Thailand, are scrambling for lottery tickets after lucky numbers appeared in the smoke and sparks of firecrackers during a local spirit ceremony.

The numbers 34 and 117, revealed from firecracker tails, have become the talk of the town after being spotted during a merit-making ritual at Wat Then Phlai in Si Prachan district yesterday, September 24. The event drew large crowds hoping to honour the dead, and perhaps win big in the next lottery draw on October 1.

The annual ceremony, now in its sixth year, was held to pay respects to ancestors, offer merit to unclaimed spirits, and remember those who died from Covid-19. The cremations of many unclaimed bodies during the pandemic were performed at Wat Then Phlai, giving the site a spiritual significance for the locals.

Phra Khru Sophon Kunathorn, abbot of Wat Sali and deputy monastic head of Suphan Buri, presided over the religious rites. On the layperson’s side, Dr Suchitra Songmatcha, secretary to the chairman of the Suphan Buri provincial administration organisation, led the event.

To support the local community, 2,000 bags of rice, each weighing 5 kilogrammes, were distributed to residents during the event. The gesture was part of a long-standing tradition of giving back to the community while earning spiritual merit.

The ceremony was organised by Phra Khru Phisut Rattanaporn, abbot of Wat Then Phlai, along with the temple committee and villagers. The focus was not only on religious observance but also on spiritual compassion, particularly for spirits with no remaining relatives and those who died in isolation.

After the merit-making concluded, a firecracker ceremony was held for the wandering spirits. As the firecrackers exploded, numbers printed on the remnants, 34 and 117, were spotted by attendees, reported KhaoSod.

Word spread quickly, sparking a frenzy as hopeful villagers rushed to snap up all related lottery numbers from local vendors.
