Two of the safest hands in soccer are looking forward to swapping goalkeeping gloves for golf clubs and do combat in the highly anticipated Reignwood Icons of Football tournament in Bangkok.

Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart made known he is relishing the prospect of going head to head with one of the world’s most famous shotstoppers, Ex Denmark and Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, as Team England tees off with Team World early next month on the immaculate Robinswood Golf Course at Reignwood Park.

“I didn’t have many icons growing up but one person I always looked up to is actually on the opposition team, Peter Schmeichel. I can’t wait to battle with him.

“As a kid, it was all about Man United on TV, with Peter pulling off those massive saves and being such a character at the back. That’s what made watching him so thrilling.”

Scheduled for March 1-2, Hart revealed he relishes the idea of teeing off with Schmeichel once again, albeit on a different field of play.

“It’d be unbelievable. I know Peter well and grew up with his son, Kasper. I idolised him, and sharing a field with him, even a golf course, is a win for me.”

But the twist doesn’t end there for the ex-England international. Hart isn’t just facing one opponent but reigniting old rivalries as he teams up with and against former Premier League adversaries. Joining him are ex-United adversaries like Paul Scholes and Phil Jones, alongside Premier League stalwarts John Terry, Theo Walcott, and Phil Jagielka.

“It’s mad, isn’t it? One moment you’re battling on the pitch, and the next, you’re high-fiving on the fairway. But I’m completely devoted to my team. Besides, we’re professionals and can easily put past skirmishes behind us.”

While the tone may be more light-hearted than the average Premier League clash, the 37 year old former City and Celtic goalkeeper was quick to stress their competitiveness remains intact.

“We’re serious competitors, and that’s how we reached those heights. On the course, we’re teammates ready to take on Team World.”

Despite his relatively new venture into golf, Hart’s enthusiasm is undeniable.

“Golf’s addictive. I used to just whack the ball and hope but now I’m hooked. The focus it requires and executing under pressure is exhilarating.”

A newcomer compared to some teammates, Hart is eager to improve his game while maintaining his competitive edge.

“I’m not a scratch golfer yet but I’m working hard on my handicap. I’m here to win.”

Channeling the adrenaline and focus that hallmarked his football career, Hart’s determination is as potent as ever.

“Competition runs through my veins. Golf may be different but I’m giving it everything.”

He revealed his newfound passion grew from spending ample time on Scotland’s picturesque courses.

“I’ve fallen for the game. I’m honing my skills, and while there’s room for improvement, I can hit some decent shots.”

Another significant factor for Hart is performing in front of crowds again.

“There’s nothing like that live energy. It brings out something in you. I think the fans coming to see this are in for a treat, loving both football and golf.”

Joking about potential errors on the field, Hart remained light-hearted.

“In football, you can’t hide from mistakes. I’ve let goals slip through in front of 50,000 fans, so I reckon I can handle a few missed shots here!”

With teammates like Jimmy Bullard and John Terry, Team England looks formidable.

“We’ve got big personalities and serious talent. Jimmy’s a blast, but he’s also fierce on the course. John Terry’s pushing hard too. We’re ready to clinch victory.”

Pristine fairways

And as for the venue? The immaculate Robinswood Golf Course promises an excellent challenge.

“Its pristine fairways and intricate layout could make things go spectacularly wrong if you’re not careful, that just adds to the excitement.”
