Down with fever: PM Paetongtarn hospitalised after Cambodia trip

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was rushed to the hospital last night after returning from an official trip to Cambodia, according to Government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap.

“Paetongtarn had a packed schedule in Cambodia from Wednesday to Thursday, meeting with officials and discussing important issues,” Jirayu explained.

After departing Cambodia around 2pm yesterday, April 24, she arrived back in Thailand at approximately 3.30pm.

However, shortly after her return, the 38 year old Thai prime minister began feeling unwell. She developed a mild fever that rapidly escalated into a high fever by evening.

Concerned for her health, PM Paetongtarn sought medical attention at around 9pm, with doctors advising immediate hospitalisation for further examination.

Jirayu stated that the PM will undergo additional tests this morning, April 25, with doctors planning a thorough investigation into the cause of her illness.

As a result, the Thai prime minister official schedule for today, including important meetings at Government House, has been postponed. These duties will be handled by the deputy prime minister and the Prime Minister’s Secretary-General.

The meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet earlier in the day had focused on vital issues such as US tariff policies. Paetongtarn also highlighted the importance of enhancing bilateral ties with Cambodia and strengthening cooperation among ASEAN member states to bolster their collective bargaining power.

The sudden illness has raised concerns about the prime minister’s health, with many watching closely to see how she recovers. Her health condition will be monitored closely in the coming days, and more details are expected following the results of the medical tests, reported The Nation.

On Wednesday, April 23, Human Rights Watch urged the Thai PM to address critical human rights issues with Cambodian leaders.

The visit, celebrating the 75th anniversary of Thai-Cambodian diplomatic relations, will involve meetings with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Senate President Hun Sen, and King Norodom Sihamoni.

However, amid the celebrations, concerns over transnational repression, where states suppress dissent across borders, remain. Human Rights Watch calls on Thailand not to overlook human rights while strengthening ties with Cambodia, citing both governments’ involvement in such practices.
