Bangkok man arrested for motorcycle theft after licence plate swap
A patrol unit from Phetkasem apprehended a 37 year old man for motorcycle theft, catching him in the act as he attempted to swap out the licence plate of the stolen motorcycle. The arrest occurred yesterday, January 12 at 3pm, in the Lak Song subdistrict, Bang Khae district, Bangkok.
The suspect, 37 year old Chaiyot “Boy” Boonyawong, confessed to stealing the motorcycle from the Bang Mae Nang police jurisdiction.
Police Colonel Pramote Chanboonkaew, along with his team including Pol. Lt. Col. Kamlet Poolsukho, Pol. Lt. Col. Boonyarak Thonginsri, and other officers detained Chaiyot. He was found with a Yamaha motorcycle without a licence plate and three additional licence plates.
The discovery was made during a routine patrol when officers noticed Chaiyot suspiciously changing a vehicle’s licence plate in Soi Phetkasem 63/1.
Upon inspection, no illegal items were found, but Chaiyot could not present ownership evidence and his behaviour raised suspicions. Consequently, he was taken, along with the motorcycle and licence plates, to Phetkasem Police Station.
Investigations revealed the motorcycle belonged to a man named Surin, who had reported it stolen at Bang Mae Nang Police Station on December 30, 2024. CCTV footage confirmed Chaiyot’s involvement in the theft.
Surin later visited Phetkasem Police Station, confirming ownership of the motorcycle. Officials, confident of Chaiyot’s guilt based on evidence and the victim’s affirmation, seized the motorcycle and licence plates as evidence.
Chaiyot was charged and remanded to the Phetkasem police for further legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod.
In related motorcycle theft news, Phu Sang Police have seized over 45 motorcycles, suspected of being stolen, as they were reportedly being prepared for illegal sale to neighbouring countries. These motorcycles, many brand new, were found hidden in an abandoned office building, raising concerns about a potential cross-border smuggling operation.
