Bangkok arrests three African nationals in human trafficking crackdown
Three individuals from Africa have been apprehended in connection with a notorious human trafficking ring in Bangkok. The gang, known as madam, is accused of luring women from Africa into prostitution in Thailand’s capital city.
Police from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) initiated the crackdown with the arrest of a Malian man, identified only as Baba, in Nong Khai province. Subsequently, two Tanzanian women, Lulu and Zuwena, were arrested in Bangkok on December 2. These arrests mark a significant development in an ongoing effort by the Ministry of Justice and the DSI to dismantle human trafficking operations in the country.
Police Major Siriwish Kasemsap, who directs the DSI’s Human Trafficking Bureau, explained the gravity of the situation.
“The gang members, calling themselves madam, were responsible for coercing African women into the sex trade, primarily in entertainment spots along Sukhumvit Road.”
The gang’s activities included confiscating the earnings of the women they trafficked and coercing them to cover their travel expenses. Disturbingly, the traffickers employed black magic superstitions as a means to exert control over the victims, according to Pol. Maj. Siriwish.
The trio has been formally charged with participating in the transnational crime of human trafficking, acting as a collective in their illicit operations, reported Bangkok Post.
Efforts to broaden the investigation are underway, with police determined to unearth the full extent of the trafficking network and bring those responsible to justice.
In related news, Phuket Immigration Control Centre (PICC) officers arrested four Ugandan and Tanzanian women for illegally engaging in prostitution in the province.
Residents in Phuket filed complaints with the PICC police, reporting that they had witnessed foreign women offering sexual services to foreign visitors in Soi Bangla, in the Patong area of Phuket. Phuket Times also shared pictures of the women, taken while they were talking to men at the scene.
