Thailand drenched in heavy downpour brought on by monsoon

Coastal areas face strong winds and waves; residents urged to monitor local weather alerts

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall expected in 41 provinces, including Bangkok, where up to 70% of the area is expected to be affected.

Residents are advised to be cautious of potential hazards due to the significant rainfall.

Heavy rain is anticipated in certain areas across Thailand, with particularly severe conditions forecasted for the eastern region. Those residing in the provinces of Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chanthaburi, and Trat should be especially vigilant.

These weather patterns are influenced by a moderate southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure area over northern Laos and northern Vietnam.

The TMD further cautions that tomorrow, August 23, 42 provinces will experience heavy rain, with Bangkok expecting 60% of its area to be affected. In the upper Andaman Sea, waves are predicted to reach 1 to 2 metres, while the lower Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will have waves around 1 metre. In areas with thunderstorms, waves could exceed 2 metres, and mariners are advised to navigate cautiously and avoid these stormy regions.
