Thai nationals linked to Cambodian online crime face arrest

The Technology Crime Suppression Division in Mueang Thong Thani announced progress regarding the repatriation of Thai nationals from Cambodia linked to online crime syndicates.
Police Lieutenant General Trirong Phiwphan, head of the division, yesterday, March 3, indicated that the process is currently under the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), under directives from Police General Kittirat Phanphuet, the national police chief, and Police General Thatchai Pitanilabut, the national police inspector.
The latter also directs the Information Technology Crime Suppression Centre, which has initiated investigations into 46 case IDs involving online crime.
The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau has been appointed to work alongside Provincial Police Region 2, Sa Kaeo province police, and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division to investigate these matters. Initial questioning, combined with investigative data from Provincial Police Region 2, revealed people suspected of participating in transnational crime organisations and related offences.
Consequently, evidence has been gathered, and Police Colonel Ratchachok Liwanitkun, deputy commander of the Technology Crime Suppression Division 5, has sought approval for arrest warrants, reported KhaoSod.
The warrants target over 100 Thai nationals and two foreigners, identified as Chinese nationals, referred to as bosses. Pol. Lt. Gen. Trirong is set to follow up on the case’s progress. The national police office is expected to provide further detailed announcements on this matter.
In similar news, some 119 Thai nationals were among 230 foreigners released from a scam call centre in Poipet, Cambodia, as law enforcement continues its battle against cybercrime.
On March 1, Cambodia’s immigration department reported the deportation of 119 Thais, comprising 61 men and 58 women, who had unlawfully entered and resided in the country.
The deportation took place via the Poipet border checkpoint, with Thai police stationed in Aranyaprathet prepared to receive and interview the individuals about their experiences.
The Cambodian National Police General Directorate, following operations on February 22 and February 23 at two locations in Poipet City, Banteay Meanchey province, issued a statement detailing the arrests.
