Man arrested for bag snatching to fund online gambling habit
Unemployed man's addiction ruins migrant’s dream of supporting her family

A 47 year old man was arrested by police at Rattanathibet Police Station for snatching a bag to fund online gambling. His mother publicly chastised the suspect, Navi, emphasising she never raised her son to be a criminal, despite his unemployment.
Investigations began on April 27 when a 25 year old Myanmar national, Nan Mu Aw Kon, reported a theft at Rattanathibet Police Station in Nonthaburi. She stated that around 9.13pm, as she was cycling home, a man riding a blue Honda Wave motorcycle snatched her bag from the front basket.
The bag contained 28,000 baht (US$840), a mobile phone, a passport, work permit, and other documents. CCTV footage confirmed the suspect as a man between 40 and 45 years old, wearing a black mask and riding a motorcycle without a licence plate. He initially drove past the victim before returning to seize the bag and flee.
Navi confessed to the crime, explaining that unemployment led him to seek money for daily expenses. He borrowed a friend’s motorcycle, searched for a victim, and spotted Nan Mu Aw Kon with her bag in the bicycle basket.
After the theft, he used 12,000 baht (US$360) to pay off a daily loan, bought a mobile phone for 6,000 baht (US$180), and spent 3,000 baht (US$90) on online gambling before being apprehended.
Navi’s mother visited him at the police station, expressing her dismay at his actions. She insisted that despite his joblessness, the family provided food and 50 baht daily, arguing that financial hardship was not severe enough to justify his crime.

Meanwhile, Nan Mu Aw Kon identified Navi as the culprit and mentioned that the stolen money was her salary, intended to be sent back to her family in Myanmar.
Police records revealed that Navi had previously been convicted of a similar theft in 2017, resulting in a prison sentence of over two years.
Following the current investigation, he has been charged with theft using a vehicle to facilitate the crime or evade capture, and further legal proceedings are underway at Rattanathibet Police Station.
