A father shot and killed his son yesterday after an intense altercation outside their home in Chanuman District, Amnat Charoen Province. The son, reportedly under the influence of methamphetamine, had violently assaulted his wife and mother.

Police Lieutenant Sombat Inlert from Chanuman Police Station received the distress call and promptly arrived at the scene, accompanied by forensic officers, medical personnel, and rescue workers. The incident took place in Pa Ko Subdistrict, where a 37 year old man was found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The father, 68 year old Kohn, stood by awaiting the police with a shotgun in hand and a spent cartridge nearby. He confessed to shooting his son, explaining that the son had been in a drug-induced rage, attacking his wife, and then turning on his mother when she attempted to intervene. Kohn stated that he had intended only to scare his son into stopping the violence.

“He was out of control, kicking and punching his mother and shouting that he would kill us all. I couldn’t take it anymore. I went inside to grab the gun, hoping to frighten him into stopping, but he ran towards me, and I had no choice but to fire.”

The mother, who witnessed the incident, described her son’s increasingly erratic behaviour over the past few months. She believed he had been using drugs, which made him prone to violent outbursts.

“He had been so easily angered recently, especially in the past four to five months. We suspected drugs were involved.

“When he started beating his wife, I tried to stop him, but he turned on me and hit me too. My husband grabbed the gun to scare him, but he didn’t stop and went after his father.”

She added that despite their efforts to support him financially, including giving him money from selling their cattle, his behaviour only worsened.

“We gave him everything, but he kept getting worse.”

Police have detained Kohn and confiscated the shotgun for further investigation. They are currently questioning witnesses to determine the full circumstances of the altercation. The son’s body has been sent for an autopsy before being returned to the family for religious rites, reported KhaoSod.
