Chiang Rai man arrested for illegal firearm collection

Police arrested a 44 year old man in the Mueang district, Chiang Rai, after he posted images of illegal firearms on his Facebook account. Upon searching his home, Police discovered a substantial collection of firearms, reportedly purchased from acquaintances. Some weapons were sent by customers for repainting.

Yesterday, February 19, Police Lieutenant General Tairong Phiwphan, alongside high-ranking officers, ordered a crackdown on illegal activities conducted online, particularly involving firearms. Following this directive, police officers identified the Facebook account of the man, Jatuporn, which had displayed images of shotguns.

With sufficient evidence, they obtained a search warrant for his residence in Mae Korn subdistrict, Mueang district, Chiang Rai province, leading to his arrest.

During the investigation, Jatuporn admitted to acquiring firearms from known contacts. Additionally, some of the firearms belonged to customers who had sent them for stock repainting, reported KhaoSod.

He now faces charges for possession of unlicensed firearms, holding firearms licensed to others, and possessing chainsaws without official permission. The case has been referred to the Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station for legal proceedings.

In similar news, a former police officer was apprehended for modifying and assembling BB gun parts into firearms capable of shooting live ammunition and selling them upon request. On January 15, police from Sai Noi district, Nonthaburi province, arrested 55 year old former Border Patrol Police officer, Manut Wongsuwan.

The arrest took place in a department store car park in Sai Noi, where police seized several modified firearms, including a Colt M16 A4 with a scope and a magazine capable of holding 30 rounds, and two Colt M4 A1 rifles with 15-round magazines.

Additionally, two magazines containing 5.96 mm rounds were confiscated, all of which were originally BB guns altered to fire live rounds.

The arrest followed a tip-off received by Sai Noi police about an impending illegal arms trade scheduled to occur at the mentioned car park.
