Japan has barred the entry of foreigners who are travelling from Thailand and 6 other countries in an effort to slow the spread of Covid-19, particularly the more infectious variant first detected in India. The restrictions, adding to Japan’s long list of banned arrivals, go into effect today.

Foreigners who have been to Thailand,Cambodia, Sri Lanka, the Seychelles, Saint Lucia, East Timor and Mongolia 14 days prior to arrival will not be allowed to enter Japan under the added restrictions. Permanent residents and their families can also still enter Japan as well as those with special circumstances.

Foreign permanent residents of Japan who recently travelled to countries with high cases linked to the B.1.617 coronavirus variant, which was first found in India, are barred from re-entering Japan. Those, with the exception of Japanese citizens, who have been to India, Pakistan, Nepal, the Maldives or Bangladesh 14 days before arrival are not allowed to enter Japan.

Japanese citizens can still return home and must quarantine for 6 days at a certified facility after visiting at-risk countries.

Wonder if your flying from Thailand and have a plane switch in Tokyo.

@Greg – I face that very issue in July on Japan Airlines. Few hours in transit after my flight from BKK, in Haneda Airport in Tokyo. Then on to the US. JAL says that is permitted, staying in the transit area. However if your next flight involves a flight from a different airport, like Narita, even only traveling on their shuttle bus, you are deemed to have entered Japan and cannot do so. Of course rules constantly change so check often.

not sure but i believe this means stop overs/plane changes on transit to US or elsewhere from thailand are a no-go. look for Korean Airlines, China Airlines to follow suit. reason? Thailand was and still is far too little, too late on the vac procurement and roll out

@John K. Good to know about JAL allowing stopovers if plane change from same airport.

Airlines also assured passengers that they could transit through airports without it counting as being in the country, only for them to find themselves paying for hotel quarantine on arrival in the UK, @John K.

Not the same thing, obviously, but Japan may not overlook the possibility of the variant being passed on to others in the transit area and close the loophole.

@Simon Small. Your comment regarding the U.K. and transmitting airports is not correct. It was made very clear that even transiting a Red list or Amber list country results in quarantine rules being applied on arrival in the U.K. So BKK to LHR via Doha or Dubai for example, will require you to follow Red list hotel quarantine rules on arrival in the U.K.

Nigel is quite correct, your last port of embarkation if transiting in Dubai,Abu Dhabi or Doha going to the UK from Thailand are red list countries.you have mingled with people from a red list country so no reason you should not be liable for quarantine.those places are full of UK expatriates and if they made any sort of exception for people transiting through to the UK the government would be inundated with complaints within hours of making such an announcement not that they ever did or would.even they are not that stupid.
