UPDATE

Patong Police are still probing the cause of the death of a Belgian man reported on Wednesday. The Phuket Express reported yesterday that Patong Police are reviewing the incident to determine if the man did indeed slip and fall, as was reported earlier, or if his death was caused by a physical confrontation.

The victim’s friend said they got in a tuk tuk taxi from Bangla Road to an apartment on Soi Na Nai in the early hours of the morning. The driver wanted to charge them 300 baht, however the friend thought this was too expensive, and they started to argue, he said.

Patong Police said it is possible that residents who lived in the apartment block where the incident took place got annoyed by the argument, and became involved.

A Belgian man tragically died after he reportedly tried to defuse an argument in Patong. The man’s friend told Patong Police that he had been in a heated argument with a Thai man at an apartment in Soi Nanai.

The victim had been trying to stop the heated exchange, and for unknown reasons, he reportedly ran and slipped, hitting his head on the ground. He was taken to Patong Hospital in a Tuk Tuk taxi and pronounced dead at the hospital, The Phuket Express reported today.

The victim’s name was withheld pending embassy and family notification.

Patong Police are continuing to investigate the incident to determine the exact cause of death. Police did not disclose details of the argument or the identity of the Thai man.

This news comes after another tragic death of a foreigner in Thailand just two days ago.

A 58 year old German man drowned at Koh Samui‘s Chaweng Beach on Monday. Bo Phut Police said the tourist had gone into the water with his girlfriend. When his girlfriend got out of the water, she could not find her boyfriend at the beach.

A jet ski rider found the man’s body. Police were notified of the incident and arrived on the beach along with emergency responders. The emergency responders tried to resuscitate him but were unsuccessful since the man had been dead for some time.

Last week, a Taiwanese tourist drowned while snorkelling off an island in Thailand’s Krabi province. The tourist, 36 year old Yueh Lee, had been snorkelling off the island of Koh Hong. The unidentified friend said they had been looking at coral reefs. Lifeguards then noticed that Yueh had been lying face down in the water for too long. The lifeguards rushed to help bring Yueh to shore, realising that he was unconscious. He, unfortunately, ended up dying after choking and lacking oxygen for too long.
