The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) took a significant step towards sustainability by installing solar rooftops at its ports, marking the move towards establishing green ports. These rooftops are anticipated to generate 5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of solar energy each year, contributing to Thailand’s environmental goals.

Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri highlighted the global imperative for environmental responsibility, noting that the ministry is encouraging all its agencies to adopt green logistics. This initiative is part of a broader effort to transition to a low-carbon society, aligning with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

The installation of solar rooftops is a strategic measure to lower carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases. This effort aligns to transform PAT ports into leading green ports, thereby advancing Thailand’s aim of achieving net-zero emissions.

Kriengkrai Chaisiriwongsuk, the director of PAT, explained that the solar rooftops have been fitted at parking buildings and warehouses with a capacity of 3.798 megawatt-peak (MWp). The integration of on-grid solar technology allows the port to efficiently utilise both self-generated and external electricity.

Future plans include the addition of solar panels at the PAT Arena, which will provide an extra 622.08 kilowatt-peak (kWp) of capacity over 3,020 square metres.

These initiatives are projected to produce over 5 million kWh of solar energy annually, resulting in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2,574 tonnes per year. This reduction is comparable to the environmental benefits of planting 55,341 trees.

The PAT is committed to achieving carbon-neutral ports by 2050, which involves adopting clean technology and digitalisation, such as automated and energy-efficient systems. These advancements could potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, reported Bangkok Post.
