Thai student team claims victory at 2023 World Team Mathematics Championship

The Thai student team scored an impressive victory at the 2023 World Team Mathematics Championship (WMTC) in South Korea, scooping the title in the individual category and sweeping a total of three gold, six silver, and five bronze medals.

The mathematics championship concluded yesterday, November 28, at 10pm. The 14-member team returned to Suvarnabhumi Airport, where they were warmly welcomed.

The team was led by Phumthep Klangurai, President of Thai Talent Training and the team’s coach, who expressed immense pride in the young representatives’ achievements.

The Thai representatives managed to clinch the championship title from the Junior category and also secured first runner-up in the team category, competing against more than 20 countries from all continents including China, the United States, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Australia, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Myanmar, Taiwan, Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, and Cambodia.

The 2023 WMTC is an international mathematics competition that fosters cooperation between the Chinese Association for the Advancement of Mathematical Learning and the Association for the Search for the World’s Top Team in the United States.

The competition aims to foster relationships among youths from different regions around the globe, instil a spirit of teamwork, and promote collaboration among mathematicians worldwide to advance mathematics education. The WMTC 2023 committee was chaired by Professor Quan K. Lam from the University of California, USA, reported KhaoSod.

The competition comprises three categories: Individual Round, Relay Round, and Team Round. Each team consists of six members, and the competition is divided into three levels: Junior Level (late primary school), Intermediate Level (early secondary school), and Advanced Level (late secondary school).

For the Thai representatives in the 2023 WMTC, the achievements in all three levels are as follows:

Junior Level:

  • Individual champion title was won by Petchprim, a student from Mater Dei School, who won a cash prize of 300 US dollars.
  • First runner-up in the team category. The team members were Petchprim from Mater Dei School, Dorn from Nisphatorn Home School, Wichsitis from Bangkok Christian College, Atthawich from Suwathi Thon School, Supakorn from Bangkok Christian College, and Nathat from Singapore International School Thonburi.
  • Gold, silver, and bronze medals in the individual category were won by Petchprim, and Dorn, Wichsitis from Bangkok Christian College, Atthawich, Supakorn, and Nathat respectively.

Intermediate Level:

  • Silver medals in the individual category were won by Korn from Bangkok Christian College and Punnawit from Saengthong Witthaya School.
  • Bronze medals in the individual category were won by Narapat from St. Stephen’s International School and Suphasit from Bangkok Christian College.

Advanced Level:

  • Silver medals in the individual category were won by Sarangsang from Newton Sixth Form and Supakiat from Newton Sixth Form.
  • Bronze medals in the individual category were won by Nattapatch from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School and Phuwadet from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School.
