Thai motorcyclist dies after dodging sudden lane change by another rider
CCTV footage hints at another motorcyclist’s reckless move moments before crash
A Thai woman died in a motorcycle crash in Nonthaburi province yesterday, September 11, after swerving to avoid a sudden lane change by another rider.
Officers from Bang Srimueang Police Station were alerted to the accident at around 7.30am outside a petrol station on Ratchaphruek–Nonthaburi Road. At the scene, police and rescue workers found a 20 year old woman, later identified as Thitiporn, lying unconscious.
Despite having no visible external injuries, Thitiporn was unresponsive. Rescuers administered CPR, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her red Honda PCX motorcycle was found overturned nearby, and her helmet had come off during the crash. Skid marks measuring more than 10 metres were visible on the road surface.
A 24 year old petrol station attendant who witnessed the fatal incident, Bow, told police that Thitiporn had been riding at high speed before crashing heavily. Bow said the helmet came off on impact and believed the woman’s head struck the road with significant force.
Bow added that she saw Thitiporn briefly stand and clutch her head in pain before collapsing and losing consciousness. However, she did not see whether the woman collided with another rider or had an accident on her own.
Police reviewed CCTV footage from the petrol station, which appeared to show another motorcyclist involved. The footage revealed a man on a blue Honda Wave abruptly switching from the middle to the left lane as Thitiporn was approaching.
In an attempt to avoid a collision, Thitiporn swerved but lost control, crashing in front of the petrol station. The other rider briefly stopped to check her condition before leaving the scene. Other bystanders later called the police and rescue services.
Police have not yet summoned the male motorcyclist for questioning and have not confirmed whether he played a role in causing the fatal crash.
