Thai girl left blind and disabled after overdose at Bangkok hospital

A nine year old Thai girl visited a hospital in Bangkok for treatment of diarrhoea but disaster struck when the medical team allegedly administered an overdose of medication, resulting in blindness and cerebral palsy (CP).
Renowned lawyer Ananchai Chaiyadej shared details of the case on his Facebook account on April 9. He began his post by stating, “#WrongMedicineChangeLife. A doctor gave a young girl with diarrhoea an overdose of adrenaline, turning a healthy child into a disabled, bedridden patient with CP.”
According to Ananchai, the nine year old girl, Nuengthida “Fifa” Mungbuatong, was admitted to Luang Phor Taweesak Chutinataro Uthit Hospital on February 16, suffering from diarrhoea and exhaustion. A doctor administered an injection of adrenaline to raise her blood pressure.
Tragically, her blood pressure rose sharply, causing a lack of blood flow to the brain. She subsequently had blurred vision and began experiencing seizures. At around 2am on February 17, Fifa’s heart suddenly and unexpectedly stopped.
The doctor managed to bring her back to life and transferred her to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital in a critical condition. At that point, she was suffering from fluid-filled lungs, an enlarged heart, and irregular heart rhythms.

Between February 19 and 20, her condition worsened. She went completely blind and lost the ability to speak or move her arms and legs.
The doctor informed her parents that her condition was caused by cardiac arrest and the lack of blood supply to the brain, admitting that it was the result of the adrenaline injection. The doctor also told the parents that Fifa’s condition might not improve.

The parents added that what the doctor said next was even more distressing. He reportedly stated that the medical team had provided treatment beyond what was covered by the 30-baht social welfare scheme, 30-Baht Treatment Anywhere, and therefore, the family should not expect any further care beyond that.

Ananchai appealed to any experts or skilled doctors who could offer help to Fifa and demanded that the original hospital where she received the injection be held accountable.
Yesterday, 10 April, Ananchai accompanied Fifa’s parents to meet representatives from the Ministry of Public Health to seek justice. The ministry pledged to find the best possible solution to the matter.
