Thai doctor accused of encouraging patient to die after suicide attempt

A Thai woman battling depression and bipolar disorder accused a doctor at a hospital in Udon Thani, Isaan province, of urging her to end her life. This shocking claim surfaced after she was admitted following a suicide attempt on April 3.

The 24 year old woman, Chompoo, shared her story with ThaiRath, seeking justice and calling for disciplinary action against the doctor. She also alleged that the doctor threatened to sue her if she recorded a video of him or shared the incident with the public.

Chompoo explained that she suffers from depression and a bipolar disorder. On the day of the incident, she consumed ten sleeping pills due to her unstable mental state, which caused her to vomit. So, her sister rushed her to the hospital.

Chompoo said she waited for treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) from 7pm to 9pm before finally seeing the doctor. According to her account, the doctor shocked her by saying…

“This medicine is not going to kill you. If you want to die, take…”

Chompoo could not recall the name of the medicine the doctor mentioned but stated that his words left her shocked. She decided to leave the ICU and called her sister.

The doctor reportedly believed that Chompoo was attempting to record him and threatened legal action if the video was shared publicly. A nurse tried to stop her as she walked out of the room in tears but the doctor intervened, saying, “Let her go.”

Chompoo said she wanted the hospital’s management board to take action against the doctor to prevent him from behaving similarly in future. She added that she heard from other patients that many had endured similar experiences with the same doctor.

Chompoo’s 23 year old sister, Som, told ThaiRath that other patients had been verbally and physically abused by the doctor but were too afraid to pursue legal action.

ThaiRath reported that a hospital representative had contacted Chompoo and promised to investigate her complaint. The representative stated that the doctor had been temporarily suspended but declined to give an interview to the media.

As of now, neither the hospital nor the accused doctor has issued a formal statement regarding the matter.
