Phumtham inspects U-Tapao Airport project set for 2029 completion

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Phumtham Wechayachai visited U-Tapao Airport to monitor the progress of its development project, aiming for completion by 2029. The deputy PM inspected the U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Aviation City development project in Ban Chang district, Rayong province.

Accompanied by Tharit Issarayangyuen, Deputy Secretary-General of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Office, naval representatives, and private sector construction and utility representatives, Phumtham received updates on the project’s progress in various aspects to prepare essential infrastructure in the EEC area, aiming to boost investment in key industries.

Phumtham emphasised the critical importance of the U-Tapao Airport project in driving the EEC’s development. He expressed satisfaction with the cooperation between the government, represented by the Royal Thai Navy (RTN), and the private sector. As Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the EEC Policy Committee, he assured that he would address any project bottlenecks to ensure timely completion, enhancing the country’s economic competitiveness.

The development of U-Tapao Airport and the Eastern Aviation City includes significant state projects such as the construction of the second runway and taxiway. The RTN has been allocated a budget of 16.21 billion baht, and the EEC Office has handed over the necessary land for construction. The selection process for construction contractors and consultants to oversee infrastructure projects like electrical and cooling systems is underway.

The solar power plant, with a capacity of 15 megawatts, is about 95% complete. The water supply and wastewater systems, with a production capacity of 10,000 cubic metres per day (phase one), are 100% complete, while the aviation fuel service system is around 50% complete overall.

Infrastructure projects

Coordination for private sector construction (NTP) is expected to commence this year, paving the way for major projects like the third passenger terminal, secondary aircraft stands, and commercial business centres. U-Tapao Airport is anticipated to open in 2029, positioning itself as a regional aviation hub.

The airport aims to meet international standards, supporting the growth of the aviation industry and linking tourism to business sectors. It will become a key regional centre for tourism and air transport industries, attracting investors to the EEC area, reported KhaoSod.
