New four-lane highway to boost eastern Thailand connectivity

The Songkran holiday season might be chaotic with traffic jams, but a major four-lane highway upgrade in eastern Thailand promises to ease congestion in the future.
Highways 3486 and 348 are set to undergo a significant transformation with the construction of a 48-kilometre, 4-lane highway, designed to improve traffic flow and protect local wildlife.
The Department of Highways (DOH) has announced plans to hire a consulting engineer to design a new highway connecting Ta Phraya in Sa Kaeo Province with Non Din Daeng in Buriram. With a budget of 93.78 million baht for the feasibility study, the project has already made significant strides.
The study is now complete, with design and environmental impact assessments being prepared for submission in April. If approved, the construction will begin in 2030, with the project set to finish and open in 2034.
The revamped route will be divided into two sections: one stretching 20km from Kut Toei Village to Mai Thai Thawon Roundabout and another 28km from Mai Thai Thawon to Non Din Daeng.
Special attention is being given to the Khao Chong Tako area, where the road is narrow, winding, and prone to accidents.
The new design includes an elevated bridge structure, allowing animals to cross safely under the road, ensuring minimal environmental disruption.
This will mirror the successful wildlife-friendly road design used on Highway 304 in Prachin Buri-Nakhon Ratchasima, which was completed in 2019.
In addition, the Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary area will feature a similar elevated bridge to protect wildlife crossing along Highway 348.
The project also includes improved drainage systems and intersections with different-level roads to further enhance traffic flow and safety.
The new road will significantly reduce accidents for both humans and wildlife while boosting the region’s tourism and economic prospects. The upgraded infrastructure will connect the east to the lower northeast, providing a more flexible and efficient route for travellers.
By 2034, the upgraded four-lane highway will transform the Khao Chong Tako area, making it safer, faster, and more convenient for everyone, from drivers to wildlife.
The project not only improves connectivity but ensures that future generations can enjoy the benefits of a well-preserved environment and an efficient transportation system, reported Daily News.
