Motocross group slammed for racing through protected forest
A local motocross group has come under fire for allegedly organising an off-road motorbike event in a protected forest area in Phetchabun province, Thailand. The event, titled ENDURO MEETING reportedly saw around 300 riders entering the Khao Phlok Lhon National Forest Reserve and the community forest of Ban Sok Duea on May 12.
Community forest committee members claimed the event was unauthorised, prompting the chairman and vice-chairman to file a police report accusing the organisers of violating the Community Forest Act B.E. 2562 (2019) under sections 63 and 94.
In response to the allegations, Moto Story, a page associated with the motocross community, made a post defending the event after it had reached mainstream news outlets, explaining that the event was not a race but a tourism and fundraising activity with proper permissions.
The group clarified that the area was a community forest, not a reserve and that the event aimed to support residents and promote conservation through a future enduro reforestation activity.
The post also criticised the community forest committee’s actions and questioned their contributions to forest stewardship, adding that the motocross community often assists in rescue operations and other beneficial activities in the area.
The argument highlights the tension between conservation efforts and recreational activities in Thailand’s community forests.
While the motocross group insists on having obtained the necessary permissions and contributing to the community, the forest committee’s accusations raise concerns about the potential impact of such events on protected areas and the need for clear regulations and enforcement to ensure sustainable use of these environments.
In related news, the city of Khon Kaen has recently been disrupted by a gang of daredevil bikers, whose brazen stunts on public roads have triggered alarm and concern among residents. The local community is calling for police action against these reckless motorcyclists, fearing for the safety of other road users.
