Northern Thailand: Massive cold front triggers thunderstorms and temperature drop
A massive cold front has descended upon Northern Thailand, causing thunderstorms and strong winds, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).
This is expected to result in a significant drop in temperature, with an additional cold snap predicted to hit tonight.
The cold front has already enveloped Vietnam’s upper region, Laos and the South China Sea. As a consequence, northern Thailand is expected to experience thunderstorms, strong winds and a subsequent drop in temperature, resulting in chilly weather and gusty winds.
In the northeastern region, the temperature is predicted to decrease by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the northern, central and eastern regions, including Bangkok and its vicinity, will see a temperature drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.
Residents in northern Thailand are urged to be cautious of the dangers posed by thunderstorms and strong winds initially. It is advised to avoid staying in open areas, under large trees, and near unstable billboards. They are also asked to look after their health due to the colder weather and be aware of potential fires due to the dry climate and high winds. Farmers are advised to be prepared for potential damage to crops.
As for the northeastern monsoon that is sweeping over the Gulf of Thailand, the southern region, and the Andaman Sea, it is intensifying. This has resulted in heavy rainfall in the southern region, with waves in the Gulf of Thailand rising to 2 to 3 metres. In areas with thunderstorms, the waves could exceed three metres. The Andaman Sea has waves up to one meter high, and in areas with thunderstorms, the waves could exceed 2 metres.
Weather warnings
People in the southern region are urged to be cautious of heavy to very heavy rain and accumulated rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding and forest run-off, especially in areas near mountain slopes, water passages and low-lying areas.
Coastal residents on the east coast of the southern region should be cautious of waves hitting the shore. Boat operators should navigate with caution and avoid areas with thunderstorms. Small boats in the Gulf of Thailand are advised to remain ashore during this period, reported Sanook.
The weather forecast for Thailand from today to tomorrow includes a temperature decrease of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the north, with a 20% chance of thunderstorms and strong winds in some areas. The northeastern region will see a temperature drop of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, while the central and eastern regions, including Bangkok, will experience a drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.
In the southern region of the east coast, there is an 80% chance of thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rain in some areas. The western side of the southern region has a 60% chance of thunderstorms with heavy rain in some areas.
In Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, there will be partly cloudy weather with strong winds and a temperature drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. There is a 10% chance of thunderstorms and strong winds in some areas.
