Law student hailed for saving child from drowning at Thai beach

Brave student leaps into action, turning tragedy into triumph

A law student is being praised for saving a five year old girl from drowning at Had Kudeua beach in Mueang Ubon Ratchathani district.

She expressed her joy in applying her training knowledge to save a life. Yesterday, May 6, at 1.30pm, Ubon Ratchathani’s emergency response centre received a report about a child drowning at the beach. The rescue team from the Sappasitthiprasong Hospital and volunteers from the Chikung Foundation were promptly dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, they found a Good Samaritan administering first aid to the child, who was coughing up water. The girl was then transferred to the hospital’s children’s intensive care unit. Although she is now out of immediate danger, she remains under observation.

A photo of the young woman, identified as 19 year old Phannipa “Pin” Teutid, a second-year law student at Ubon Ratchathani University, has been widely shared online. She was helping her father sell lottery tickets at the beach when she noticed the girl in distress and rushed to assist. Phannipa successfully revived the child, earning widespread admiration from netizens.

Speaking to reporters, Phannipa recounted the events. She had just sold lottery tickets to the girl’s parents when she heard shouts about a child drowning. She quickly gathered information and contacted rescue services, providing details about the incident and requesting urgent assistance.

At the scene, she observed a relative of the girl attempting to dislodge water by shaking her over their shoulder, which she recognised as incorrect. Phannipa advised them to lay the child flat and checked for vital signs, discovering a faint pulse and no breathing.

She then performed CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Shortly after, the girl vomited water and food particles, reported KhaoSod.

Phannipa expressed her happiness and pride in using the CPR knowledge from her military training to save the girl’s life.

She advocated for educational institutions to include resuscitation training in their curriculum, as it could prove life-saving in real-life situations.
