An investigation team has been assembled to probe into an incident that occurred yesterday where a lorry registered under the number 43-3281 Nonthaburi plunged into an open manhole in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok. The incident led to substantial traffic congestion and vehicle damage.

The police chief, Thiti Saengsawang, delegated the investigation task to a committee led by Witthawat Chinkham, the head of Metropolitan Police Division 5.

The lorry was travelling down Sukhumvit Road and when it reached the mouth of Soi Sukhumvit 64/1, it crashed into the open manhole causing the cover to split into six pieces. The impact forced a motorcycle and two taxis off the road, causing damage and injuries.

The accident had a major impact on traffic flow. The lorry was found to have a green B sticker on the windscreen, fuelling public suspicion as it was a topic of controversy in various online social media reports.

To establish the facts of the incident, Witthawat issued an order to Metropolitan Police Division 5, number 348/2023, to form a fact-checking committee. The primary objective of the committee is to ascertain whether there was any negligence or omission of duty by the police, which could have led to the accident.

The committee would also determine whether such an act constitutes a disciplinary violation within the police force, reported KhaoSod.

Phopthorn Jittimaan, deputy head of Metropolitan Police Division 5, was appointed as the head of the fact-checking committee. The committee also includes Sunthorn Chaiyaraks, the investigator of the Investigation Group, Metropolitan Police Division 5, and Kritsana Chanprasert, the deputy investigator of Wat Phraya Krai Police Station, as members and secretaries. The committee was asked to expedite the investigation and submit a report for further action.
