Heinous crime: Couple arrested for farmer’s murder in Phatthalung

Police have apprehended a couple suspected of murdering a prominent farmer in Phatthalung province after they fled to Mae Sai in Chiang Rai. CCTV footage captured them leaving the scene on a motorcycle around the time of the incident, leading to their arrest.

The victim, 72 year old Phob, was an award-winning farmer and the owner of an agricultural learning centre and salak orchard. He was shot and killed on January 10 on a road in Ban Khuan Teen, Village 5, Pantae subdistrict, Khuan Khanun district, Phatthalung province.

Police from Region 5 and Mae Sai district yesterday arrested 51 year old Sahapap, known as Bong, and 32 year old Nattata, known as Nam Noei, at an apartment in Mae Sai district. Their surnames have been withheld.

Phatthalung court had issued arrest warrants for the couple after CCTV footage showed them leaving the crime scene on a motorcycle shortly after Phob was shot at 6.20pm on January 10. The arrest was carried out with the cooperation of Police Colonel Yuthsak Iamsunthorn and Police Lieutenant Colonel Wirat Jinmuang from Phatthalung provincial police, who had learned that Bong had fled to Mae Sai.

The couple is currently being detained for questioning to ascertain their motives for the crime. They will be transported back to Khuan Khanun Police Station in Phatthalung province for further legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod.

In related news, the Bangkok South Criminal Court released a Thai sedan driver on bail set at 600,000 baht after he intentionally hit and killed a motorcyclist on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok. The 30 year old suspect was captured on a security camera deliberately crashing his white Toyota Altis sedan into a black electric motorcycle ridden by a food delivery rider on Sukhumvit Road on Tuesday afternoon, January 21.

In Thailand, a person convicted of murder faces either the death penalty, life imprisonment, or imprisonment for 15 to 20 years. Premeditated murder is considered one of the most severe crimes under Thai law.
