Sleepwalking scare: Bangkok man takes deadly leap from 5th floor
A Thai man yesterday fell to his death from the fifth floor of a building in the Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok, reportedly due to sleepwalking.
The news was shared yesterday, August 25, on the Facebook page ดาวแปดแฉก (Dao Pad Chaek, which means “eight-pointed star”), reporting on the death of the 25 year old Thai man, whose name remains undisclosed. His body was found hanging from the top of a wall down the side of the building.
The page reported that the man worked as a metalwork turner and lived in the building with his relatives and colleagues. His bedroom was on the fifth floor, and unlike other rooms, its windows were not equipped with curved steel bars.
A relative of the man told the Facebook page that the deceased had a history of sleepwalking and believed this condition caused him to fall from his bedroom window.
The deceased’s employer told Channel 7 that the man had been working for him for about two years and often sleepwalked. He revealed that the deceased was found sleeping in the bathroom on the first floor on multiple occasions.
The employer added that he had advised his employee to be careful and to take good care of himself, as sleepwalking could be dangerous.
A grocery store owner, Yupin, said that the deceased was a customer and that he always seemed cheerful. She mentioned that he would always come to the shop with his close friend and expressed her shock upon hearing about his death.
Many Thai netizens found the case suspicious, with some suspecting foul play, as they strongly believed that sleepwalking could not result in such a fatal accident. However, medical professionals confirmed that sleepwalking can lead to injuries if a person walks out of the home, falls while asleep, or climbs out of a window while sleepwalking.
Officers from the Phra Ratchawang Police Station were called to investigate the scene and will question the deceased’s friends and relatives before concluding the case.
