The construction of the Purple Line’s southern extension, a crucial link between Tao Poon in the Bang Sue district and Rat Burana in southern Bangkok, is making significant progress. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) reported that the project is nearly halfway finished.

During an inspection conducted yesterday, December 15, Montri Dechasakulsom, alongside board members and executives, assessed the project’s advancement.

Montri noted that the readiness and safety of the work are being inspected in line with the Ministry of Transport‘s policy, noting that 46.3% of the work has been completed.

He emphasised the importance of adhering to the highest safety standards throughout the project’s execution to minimise the risk of accidents.

Montri urged contractors to meticulously inspect machinery and equipment, ensuring that all electrical components and wires are securely positioned with prominent warning signs.

Additionally, workers are required to adhere strictly to safety measures, particularly in high-traffic areas, to mitigate any environmental impact.

The ambitious Purple Line extension is being developed with a budget of 82.3 billion baht. Spanning a total of 23.63 kilometres, the route will include 14.29 kilometres of underground structures with ten stations, and 9.34 kilometres of elevated structures featuring seven stations.

Originating from Tao Poon Station, this extension connects with the MRT Chalong Ratchadham Line (MRT Purple Line eastern section) and the MRT Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line (MRT Blue Line).

Construction started in April 2022, with the line anticipated to be fully operational by 2028, reported Bangkok Post.

In related news, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has hit the jackpot with its new 20-baht maximum fare policy, hailed as a major triumph in public transport. Launched as part of the Ministry of Transport’s Quick Win programme, Transportation for Public Prosperity, the initiative aims to lighten the commuting costs for everyone.

Starting with the MRT Purple Line last week, the policy is set to expand, allowing passengers to travel seamlessly across both the Purple and Red Line suburban systems for a mere 20 baht using a single EMV Contactless card.
